The position, which is located outside the golf course fence in West Palm Beach, Florida, has been known for years to photographers who want to take pictures of the former president and other high-ranking officials, reports Fox News.
Yet, the arrested 58-year-old was able to stay on site for 12 hours with his weapon and other equipment, according to information from the FBI, which investigated the man's phone.
The evening newspaper New York Post, whose photographers have taken pictures from the bushes, writes that the Secret Service has been aware of the position for years.
It was on Sunday that the security detail noticed a rifle barrel sticking out of the bushes near the sixth hole. Former President Donald Trump was then about 400 meters away. When the police force fired at the location, a man fled from there in a car.
In the hiding place, an AK-47 automatic rifle with a sniper scope and a body camera were found. There were also two backpacks with ceramic plates, which could have functioned as bulletproof vests, according to news media.
The suspect was later arrested by police after a helicopter search and a car chase on Highway I-95.
