The Star Missed the European Championship Podium – Bronze to Ridefelt

It didn't go at all as planned for the Swedish orienteering star Tove Alexandersson at the European Championship in Hungary. Alexandersson made a bigger mistake already on the third control and finished fourth when the middle distance was decided on Saturday.

I've been running really badly all the way, I have problems with the direction on the flat parts. I feel like I haven't really trained on that type of orienteering, says Alexandersson in SVT's broadcast.

With fourth place, she was the best Swedish athlete, but she was over a minute behind Norwegian Andrine Benjaminsen on bronze and over four minutes behind gold medalist Simona Aebersold, Switzerland. Teammate Natalia Gemperle took silver.

In the men's class, however, there was a Swedish medal. Albin Ridefelt ran home a European Championship bronze.

I'll be really happy and proud in a little while, says Ridefelt to SVT.

The reason for the delayed joy may be that it could have been a more precious medal. Ridefelt was long the fastest in the woods, but lost his way at the end.

It's so annoying that it should end like that on the second-to-last leg, says Ridefelt.

He was one minute and five seconds behind Norwegian Eirik Langedal Breivik, who took gold 24 seconds ahead of teammate Kasper Fosser.

The long distance will be decided on Sunday.
