Three men have been sentenced for their involvement in the murder of Dutch crime reporter Peter R de Vries in 2021.

The murder, which took place in the heart of Amsterdam, sparked widespread outrage and has been called "an attack on the principles of the rule of law".

The men, identified as the shooter, the getaway car driver, and the organiser, received their sentences on Wednesday. The first two were sentenced to 28 years in prison, and the latter to 26 years in prison.

The prosecutor had demanded life imprisonment for the three men.

The fact that the person who ordered the murder is not known and is not on trial casts a shadow over the trial, said Annemiek van Spanje, the lawyer for the de Vries family, to AP earlier this year.

In total, nine people were charged with involvement in the murder. Four people have already been convicted of complicity.

Journalist Peter R de Vries was shot on 5 July 2021 in the heart of Amsterdam and died nine days later from his injuries, aged 64.

The murder sparked widespread outrage, sorrow, and anger throughout the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander called the murder of de Vries "an attack on journalism, the cornerstone of our rule of law, and therefore also an attack on the principles of the rule of law".

Reporter de Vries was known for his investigations into organised crime and gang criminality in the Netherlands and internationally. He lived with police protection at times due to the threat against him.
