Two people have been discharged from the hospital after the accident at Northvolt in Skellefteå on Sunday.
The accident occurred in a laboratory during a routine task where waste was to be handled after a quality control, according to press chief Matti Kataja in an email to TT.
"... and in connection with this, one person was exposed to some kind of steam for a few seconds. The other person was not exposed, but was in the vicinity with protective equipment," he writes.
The individuals were decontaminated and then taken to the hospital for control.
At 17.30, Northvolt announced that the individuals are doing well and have left the hospital.
It is still unclear what kind of steam it was, but according to SVT Västerbotten, it is said to have been electrolyte steam.
"But generally, one can say that short-term exposure to electrolyte steam can lead to coughing and irritation in the nose, throat, and airways," Matti Kataja writes to TT.
According to the police in Västerbotten, it is too early to say whether the accident will be subject to a police investigation.
A review conducted by Dagens Nyheter shows that at least 26 serious accidents have occurred at Northvolt's facilities since 2019. A fatal accident in November last year is being investigated by the prosecutor.
A police investigation is also ongoing regarding three men in Skellefteå who were found dead after their work shifts. All three worked at the battery factory Northvolt. It is still too early to say whether the deceased may have been exposed to something in their work environment or if the deaths have other causes.
