Unemployment in the UK rose to 4.4 per cent in April, according to new figures from the British statistics agency ONS.
This can be compared to 4.3 per cent in March.
Analysts had on average expected an unchanged unemployment rate in May, according to Bloomberg's compilation of forecasts.
