The main day of the EU election is in full swing, with open polling stations in 20 of the 27 countries. Among the leaders who have voted today are Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Many of the leaders in the union have reason to be nervous. Scholz and his French colleague President Emmanuel Macron are being challenged by the right-wing populists in Germany's AfD and France's RN, who are fighting to become the EU's largest party.

And in Spain, politicians are facing voter apathy – at 2 pm, Spanish media reported that only 28% of voters had turned out, 7 percentage points lower than at the same time in the previous election.

The first results are expected after Italy, the last country to close its polling stations, at 11 pm.
