The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in northwestern Götaland and parts of western Svealand on Thursday. Småland, particularly Gislaved and Gnosjö, was severely affected by the rain on Thursday.

We're fully loaded. We have many ongoing cases, says a leading operator at the rescue service.

Several buildings have been water-damaged and several roads have been flooded in Jönköping County. Both road 993 from Uppgränna to Narbäcken and road 153 from Smålandsstenar to Fållinge have been closed in both directions according to the Swedish Transport Administration.

In Stockholm, parts of the public transport system were stopped temporarily due to the thunderstorm, including the green line of the subway and the Lidingöbanan.

The weather also caused problems in eastern Sörmland. A lightning strike caused a forest fire outside Jönåker west of Nyköping, according to Sörmlands Nyheter. Due to the bad weather, the train traffic between Norrköping and Stockholm was stopped after a signal failure, also caused by the bad weather, according to the newspaper.

However, while the bad weather caused problems for many, others could enjoy the high summer temperatures. On several locations in Skåne, the thermometer reached up to 30 degrees Celsius.

In Lund, a 69-year-old heat record was broken.

It was 31 degrees. It hasn't been this warm this late in the season since 1955, says SMHI's on-duty meteorologist Petter Lind.

On Friday, many in eastern Svealand can expect rain showers.
