Shaky start for Åberg – double nightmare holes

Ludvig Åberg has a bit of a way to go to catch the leaders after the first round in the BMW Championship. The Swede made two consecutive double bogeys – after hitting the water two holes in a row. Alex Norén, on the other hand, delivered a super round and is in the lead.

It all started really well for Åberg in the second of a total of three final tournaments on the PGA tour.

Three birdies under the first five holes, and all parts of the game were in place. The most impressive was the long birdie putt on the fifth, which took him up to a shared lead.

But then it became increasingly shaky.

Double nightmare holes

On the ninth hole, Åberg hit the water on the drive, and made a double bogey. The Swede seemed to respond quickly, when he hit his wood club an almost incredible 382 meters on the sloping tenth hole.

Despite this, it ended in a new catastrophe, when the next shot plunged into the water, and Åberg had to write down another double bogey on the scorecard.

Åberg finished nicely, however, and made three straight birdies on the last three holes. He thus ended the day on par and a shared 22nd place.

Norén in the lead

It went much better for the other Swede who made it to the tournament in Castle Rock, Colorado, where only the 50 best on the PGA tour remain.

Alex Norén also started with three birdies under the first five holes. And the 42-year-old managed to keep his game together much better than Åberg did.

Norén finished the round four under par, and lies in a shared third place. Keegan Bradley leads on six under, followed by Hideki Matsuyama on five under.

Norén is ranked 45th in the FedExCup playoffs going into the week, and needs a good week to qualify for the final tournament next week, where the top 30 will participate.

Åberg is ranked eighth going into the week and will make it regardless. The placement is still important, and determines how many strokes behind the leader one starts the tournament.
