Against the Current in the Year's Last Major

Quadruple bogey and far behind the lead. It hasn't been a good start for the highest ranked Swedish women at a windy British Open. It's going better for Linnea Ström, who has a top feeling.

Anna Nordqvist, who won the major tournament in 2021, started the competition in a nightmare way and made a quadruple bogey already on the third hole. She never recovered from it, but continued to lose strokes and finished the round seven over par.

Nearly as bad was the performance of both Madelene Sagström and Linn Grant, who went six and five over par respectively on Thursday.

The three aforementioned Swedish women all have a great chance of being part of Europe's team when the Solheim Cup is decided in Virginia, USA, on 13-15 September.

On the other hand, Linnea Ström, somewhat of a dark horse, finished the first day one under par. This places the 27-year-old in a tie for 12th place, four strokes behind leader Charley Hull.

The major tournament, played on the classic St. Andrews course, is teeming with Swedes. A total of nine are participating. Next best in the domestic standings are Maja Stark and Johanna Gustafsson, who are both one over par after one day.

Louise Rydqvist, the 23-year-old amateur, is two over par, Sara Kjellker three over, and Lisa Pettersson is four over par.
