One month ago, runner Abeba Aregawi received a belated Olympic Games bronze medal – twelve years after the 1,500-meter final in London 2012. Now, the bronze medal appears to be upgraded to a silver medal following another doping disqualification that affects the race retroactively.

Russian Tatjana Tomasjova was banned for ten years on Tuesday following a decision from the sports arbitration court, Cas, based on new analyses of samples taken prior to the Olympic Games in London. The ban means that all of Tomasjova's results from June 21, 2012, to January 3, 2015, will be stricken.

As a result, the Russian will lose the Olympic Games silver medal she was awarded retroactively after both the race winner and runner-up – Turkish athletes Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut – were previously banned for doping.

Aregawi, who competed for Ethiopia in London 2012 and began representing Sweden later that same year, finished fifth in the race but now appears to be upgraded to a silver medalist.
