Rescue workers in war-torn Sudan have found the remains of 20 people who were killed in a previous airstrike in the capital Khartum. Nearly 30 people were injured in the attack carried out by Sudan's army.

Four of the dead were children, according to the voluntary organization ERR, which has been conducting rescue operations since the severe civil unrest broke out between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Over the weekend, another 30 people were killed in an attack on a mosque in the city of Wad Madani, according to a local resistance group, reports the French news agency AFP.

The group, called Wad Madani's resistance movement, accuses the military of bombing the mosque. The attack was carried out after an evening sermon when many had gathered at the mosque.

In both cases, a large part of the bodies are said to have been so badly burned that they are difficult to identify. The information has not been confirmed by independent sources.

Sudan's military stepped up the number of airstrikes against targets in central parts of the capital in September.
