The EU Parliament clearly and unequivocally says yes to the EU's latest large-scale support to Ukraine.
The proposal to lend up to 35 billion euros – nearly 400 billion kronor – was approved with 518 yes-votes against 56 no-votes and 61 abstentions.
The money is secured with the help of the multi-billion amounts of Russian central bank assets that have been frozen in the EU since Russia launched its latest invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
However, the EU countries still need to agree to extend the freezing period for the money by 36 months at a time instead of the normal 6 months. Hungary, as the autumn's presidency in the Council of Ministers, has decided to take up this issue first after the upcoming US presidential election.
