For security reasons, Hamas is likely to keep the identity of its new leader secret, says a source within the terrorist-stamped movement to BBC.

The plan is to elect a new leader in March next year, and until then, Hamas will be governed by a committee of five members, according to the channel.

One of the five, Khalil al-Hayya, has temporarily taken on the responsibility for most of the movement's political and foreign affairs and is therefore considered the acting Hamas leader, according to the source who spoke to BBC.

On Friday, Hamas confirmed that its leader Yahya Sinwar was dead after Israeli authorities reported the day before that Sinwar had been killed in a firefight with Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza.

Hamas has also previously kept its leader's identity secret. This also happened after the murder of Hamas founder and leader Ahmed Yassin and his successor Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi.
