At Least 80 Dead in Sudan Attack

Paramilitary forces have killed at least 80 people in a village in southeastern Sudan, according to hospital sources and witnesses. Attempts to achieve a ceasefire in the country's civil war have so far proven fruitless.

The attack took place on Thursday in the village of Jalgini in the state of Sennar.

Three military vehicles attacked Jalgini. The inhabitants resisted, which led to the attackers retreating, only to return later with multiple vehicles, says a local resident, whose son was injured in the attack, to AFP.

They opened fire, set houses on fire, and killed many people, says the man, who does not want to give his name.

The paramilitary group RSF (Rapid Support Forces), which has been at war with Sudan's government forces since April 2023, captured Sennar's state capital Sinja in June. Since then, around 726,000 people have been forced to flee, according to the UN's migration agency IOM.

In an attempt to achieve a ceasefire in the civil war, talks were initiated on Wednesday in Switzerland under the leadership of the USA and Saudi Arabia. However, the Sudanese army has so far refused to participate.

Both sides have been accused of brutal war crimes, including deliberately targeting civilians, indiscriminately shelling residential areas, and blocking humanitarian aid.

The war in Sudan is described as the world's largest humanitarian disaster and has forced ten million people to flee.
