Canada appeals the penalty for the drone scandal

Canada is appealing the points deduction that the country's women's national football team received in the ongoing Olympic Games tournament. The team was penalized with a six-point deduction for spying on the premier opponent New Zealand's training with the help of a drone.

It is Canada's football association and the country's national Olympic committee that have filed an appeal to the sports arbitration court Cas.

They want the points deduction to be removed entirely or for the points deduction to be somewhat mitigated, writes Cas in a press release. The parties will be heard on Tuesday and a decision on the matter is expected to come around lunch on Wednesday.

Fifa (International Football Association) also decided that national team captain Bev Priestman will be suspended for one year from all forms of football. Assistant coach Jasmine Mander and video analyst Joseph Lombardi received the same penalty. However, that part is not being appealed by Canada, according to Cas.

The reigning OS champion – Canada beat Sweden in the OS final in 2021 on penalties – has won its two opening matches against New Zealand and France. With the points deduction included, the Canadian team thus has zero points, but the team still has a chance to advance to the quarterfinals regardless of whether the appeal is successful or not.

On Wednesday, the team will play its last group stage match in the OS, against Colombia in Nice.
