The number of pets is increasing in Sweden – primarily the cats.

The cats have increased by 200,000 in four years, according to the insurance company Agria. This means that they are consolidating their position as Sweden's most popular pets.

The number of households that have a pet has also continued to increase, from 32 to 34 percent since the survey four years ago.

"We can see that more and more households in the country are choosing to live together with animals, and primarily it is the cats that continue to increase in popularity and become more numerous", says Patrik Olsson at Agria in a press release.

At least one cat lives in every fifth household.

In just over half (56 percent) of cat households, there is only one cat, while in 32 percent of households there are two, and in 12 percent there are three or more cats.

The number of dogs in Sweden is, according to the survey, 926,000, which is roughly the same number as four years ago.

Among the smaller pets, rabbits and aquarium fish are the most popular. They can be found in approximately 78,000 households each.
