A German-Russian man who fought on the Russian side in eastern Ukraine has been charged with suspected terrorist offenses and threats to national security in Germany, according to prosecutors.
The suspect was one of two men arrested in April on suspicion of planning attacks on Germany with the aim of undermining the country's support for Ukraine. Their targets allegedly included American military bases in Germany.
The man is also being charged with having fought with an armed unit in the Russian-controlled so-called Donetsk People's Republic in eastern Ukraine between 2014 and 2016.
According to prosecutors, the militia he belonged to used violence against the civilian population on repeated occasions.
A separate investigation into the man's possible involvement in espionage activities is also ongoing.
