Crisis Measures in Threatened and Stigmatized City

The authorities in the city of Springfield, in the American state of Ohio, are introducing a kind of state of emergency to be able to act against a wave of threats and hatred directed at the city.

The Mayor Rob Rue decided on Thursday to give himself greater powers to manage crises and alleviate growing concern among residents, reports American media.

"With this, the administrations will be able to more effectively address risks that arise, such as unrest, cyber threats and potential violent acts," announced Rue.

Springfield was thrown into the political spotlight last week, when Donald Trump mentioned the town in the presidential candidates' TV debate. There, he presented false claims to tens of millions of viewers that migrants had come there and eaten the residents' pets.

Last Friday, all schools in the town were closed due to bomb threats, and since then, police have searched all school premises every morning. Local officials have received at least 30 violent threats, and Ohio's Governor Mike DeWine, who like Donald Trump is a Republican, has reinforced the town with state resources.

We receive multiple bomb threats every day, said the state's emergency response chief Andy Wilson at a press conference on Thursday.

Springfield, Ohio, has nearly 60,000 residents.
