Sudan's health department noted late on Sunday evening that the Arbaat dam had burst and announced that a rescue operation had been initiated. At that stage, the department reported that four people had died, without mentioning anything about those missing.

The dam is located in northeastern Sudan, in a region by the Red Sea. A local authority representative tells a Sudanese news site that at least 60 people may have died in the dam accident and that many are still missing.

In war-torn Sudan, one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters has been ongoing, where around 25 million people, more than half the population, are facing starvation.

A war has been raging between government forces and the paramilitary group RSF since the spring of 2023. Both sides have been accused of brutal war crimes and blocking humanitarian aid.

Earlier this summer, at least 39 people have died in the country due to heavy rainfall and flooding, which is feared to exacerbate a cholera outbreak.
