Mexican soldiers killed six people and injured another ten when they fired at a group of 33 migrants traveling in cars. The incident occurred on a road near Huixtla in Mexico, near the border with Guatemala, late on Tuesday, local time.
"Military personnel reported hearing shots and two of the soldiers then used their weapons and managed to stop one of the two pickup trucks," the Mexican Defense Department stated in a statement about the incident.
The two soldiers have been suspended from duty pending an investigation.
The 33 individuals originated from countries such as Nepal, India, Pakistan, Egypt, and Cuba. The military did not provide information on the nationality of the six who died or the ten who were injured. The remaining 17 have been handed over to the authorities.
