The UN Security Council in New York was convened on Wednesday for an emergency meeting on the development in the Middle East. Ahead of the meeting, the Israeli UN ambassador Danny Danon launched an attack on Iran.
Iran's mask has finally fallen, the regime can no longer hide in the shadows or behind its supporters, said the UN ambassador.
After the horrific attack on ten million civilians in Israel, the regime in Iran had the audacity to write to the UN Security Council and say that they had acted in accordance with international laws in attacks on military targets – and that any response from Israel would be against the law.
"Violated sovereignty"
Iran's UN ambassador Amir Saeed Iravan said that Israel had "violated Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity over the past month". He also pointed to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya, who was in Tehran in July.
Israel has also attacked Iran's embassy in Syria, continued the UN ambassador, accusing the Security Council of not having condemned the attack when leading commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were killed.
Iran also attacked the US, saying that the "massacres" in Gaza were being carried out with American bombs.
Guterres: Time running out
The US has not sent the same warning signals to Israel about carrying out a retaliation as during the Iranian robot attacks six months ago. But late on Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced that he did not support an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as retaliation for Iran's robot attacks.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres summed up the beginning of the meeting:
The raging fires in the Middle East are rapidly becoming an inferno. Time is running out.
