Fritz to the semis – the audience hopes for a dream duel

It is 21 years since an American male player won a Grand Slam title in tennis. Then Taylor Fritz was only five years old. After 3–1 in the US Open quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev, he is on a good path to break the curse.

The audience in New York has been waiting for someone from the USA to win the men's singles tournament since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.

Maybe it's Taylor Fritz who will do it.

For the first time in his career, the 26-year-old has qualified for the semifinals in a Grand Slam tournament.

It feels fantastic. I've lost many quarterfinals over the years. Today it just felt different somehow, I felt it was time and nothing could be better than succeeding in front of this audience, says Fritz in the victory interview on Discovery+.

It was an impressive performance in the quarterfinals against German world number four Alexander Zverev, where Fritz drew the longest straw in a battle filled with heavy baseline duels, 3–1 in sets in the end (7–6, 3–6, 6–4, 7–6).

And the home crowd can get a real dream semifinal. Next up for Fritz is the winner of the quarterfinal between veteran Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria and another 26-year-old American, Frances Tiafoe.

I know the audience would love to see me face Francis so that we definitely get an American in the final. It would be crazy. But regardless of who I meet, I'm ready, says Fritz.
