The Furniture Design Museum in Stockholm is moving to Älmhult in Småland, announced in a press release.
The museum was founded by architects Kersti Sandin and Lars Bülow, and their collection of 1,200 pieces of furniture and other design objects will now be acquired by Ikea in Älmhult.
"We not only have the ambition to preserve this inspiring heritage – but want to develop it by making design accessible and relevant to everyone, regardless of background", says Tina Pettersson Lind, CEO of Ikea Älmhult AB in the press release.
Lars Bülow views the move positively.
"It feels gratifying that our collection gets an owner with the prerequisites to develop the museum's vision – to support Scandinavian furniture culture through theme exhibitions, seminars, and workshops", he says.
It has not yet been decided when the Furniture Design Museum will open in Älmhult. The acquisition was made during the summer, and the search for a permanent location for the collection is currently underway.
