Swedish police have been given clearance to patrol in Norway, with weapons, according to the police on their website.

The joint efforts have been seen as an important part in combating cross-border crime. However, a problem has been that Norwegian police are normally unarmed, while Swedish police are not allowed to work without weapons.

Last week, Norway raised its terror threat level and decided that the police should be armed nationally. This means that Noa (the police's national operational unit) has now given clearance.

"The decision that has now been made gives us opportunities to carry out joint efforts to combat gang crime on the Norwegian side as well", says Jonas Wendel, local police area chief in Arvika, in a comment.

A corresponding decision for Norwegian police on the Swedish side of the border has existed previously.
