Kamala Harris was met with audience cheers during her first campaign meeting in Milwaukee in the swing state of Wisconsin. She attacked Trump on several points and spoke about the future.

There is a reason why our campaign team is located here. The road to the White House goes via Wisconsin, Harris said initially and continued:

You will help us win again in 2024!

Harris then went on to praise President Joe Biden. She says she is honored to have received enough delegates on her side, and she is confident of victory.

She repeated that she "knows Donald Trump's type" from her time as a prosecutor – and was met with audience cheers.

Donald Trump will take our country back in time. He wants to worsen health insurance and give tax breaks to billionaires, Harris said, among other things, in an attack on the Republican rival.

Let Women Decide

Harris also brought up one of her key issues, about abortion and reproductive rights.

We trust that women can decide over their own bodies, she said and was met with cheers again.

Harris promised that as president, she would sign into law the day when "Congress votes for a law to restore our reproductive rights".

The Supreme Court revoked in 2022 the decision "Roe vs. Wade", which guaranteed the right to abortion at the federal level, a right that Democrats have promised to restore.

Support from Schumer, Jeffries

Kamala Harris has an advantage in the opinion polls over Donald Trump to become the President of the USA, shows a fresh opinion poll from Reuters/Ipsos. Harris receives 44 percent of the votes and Trump 42 percent according to Reuters.

At the same time, two heavy-weight Democrats gave Kamala Harris their support in the election on Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced at a press conference in Washington DC that they stand behind Harris, reports AP.

The vast majority of my senators have quickly and enthusiastically backed her, so now that the process is clear from the grassroots level and all the way up, we stand here today to back Vice President Kamala Harris, Schumer said.

Hakeem Jeffries then took over the podium and praised President Joe Biden. Biden made a "selfless decision to hand over the baton" to Kamala Harris, Jeffries said.

She will fight for our freedom, for our families, for our future, Jeffries said according to BBC and added that he is proud to support her candidacy.
