Golf star Ludvig Åberg had a heavy ending to the Scottish Open.

Instead, home hope Robert MacIntyre won the tournament. He secured the victory by making a birdie putt on the final hole, to the audience's great jubilation.

Åberg was in solo lead before Sunday's decisive round, but failed to capitalize on the position. Instead, he made his worst round of the week – 73 strokes – and fell from the lead to a shared fourth place.

If it was a day of disappointment for Åberg, another Swede was all the happier. Alex Norén made a fine finish to the tournament and climbed to a shared tenth place – and his result means he qualifies for the major tournament British Open, which starts on Thursday.

The other Swedes who made the cut, Jesper Svensson and Jens Dantorp, finished in 20th and 67th place, respectively.

Robert MacIntyre went through the four rounds at 18 under par. Australian Adam Scott, who came second, finished at minus 17. Ludvig Åberg, who made four bogeys and only one birdie on Sunday, dropped to 14 under par.

The Scottish Open is the only tournament, apart from majors and The Players Championship, where players on the DP World Tour (European Tour) and PGA Tour compete together outside North America. It is therefore one of eight tournaments with elevated status on the DP World Tour and is part of the Rolex Series, which means more prize money and more points for the winner.

The Scottish Open was played this year at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick on the Scottish east coast.
