There was real drama when the Olympic Games' first medals were to be awarded.

The men's team competition ultimately came down to the United States, Japan, and China, and everything would be decided on the bars. Stephen Nedoroscik delivered a fine series for the United States, and the American team cheered loudly when he finally landed on the mat again. It was then that the medal was all but secured.

But the loudest cheers came from the Japanese team a few minutes later, when Daiki Hashimoto put Japan firmly in the driver's seat for the Olympic gold. Several team members were seen almost crying and screaming at the top of their lungs. This despite the fact that the competition's last participant, Zhang Boheng from China, was still to come.

But the Chinese athlete failed to lift his team to first place, and in the end, the Japanese could celebrate the championship's first gymnastics gold.

The United States took the bronze and China finished in second place.

The women's team competition will be decided tomorrow, where the United States with Simone Biles on the team are the big favorites.
