Johansson missed again – Hansson advances

At 600 meters, he maintained a record pace – but the offensive effort didn't last. Victor Johansson missed the final on 800 meters freestyle at the Olympic Games. On the other hand, Louise Hansson advanced to the semifinal on 100 meters backstroke.

Long-distance swimmer Victor Johansson became sixth in the World Championship on both 400 and 800 meters freestyle in Doha in February.

In the Olympic Games in Paris, he has now missed the final on both distances.

Jönköping swimmer thought that the performance on 800 was a step forward compared to the half distance.

The first 400 is a textbook example of how it should be. Then it's annoying with the second half, just like on 400, it should be my strongest side. But it wasn't there and it started to hurt towards the end, says Johansson.

Far from the final

He got the final time 7.49,47 – 2,43 seconds above his own Swedish record from the World Championship in Doha in February.

There were fast trial swims and Johansson was almost five seconds from a final spot.

Now, 1,500 meters freestyle remains for Johansson in the Olympic pool, and then he will also swim in the 10-kilometer open water race.

Louise Hansson managed to recharge after the disappointment and the tearful last place in the final on 100 meters butterfly on Sunday evening, and she made it to the semifinal on 100 meters backstroke.

"A bit slow"

With the time 1.00,26, 43 hundredths above personal record, she became 15th.

It felt a bit slow, it was a bit tough to sleep last night. I was well aware that the first two days were the toughest both physically and mentally, so it's great to move on, says Hansson.

She has taken World Championship gold on the distance in short course, but in long course, she cannot utilize her impressive underwater work in the same way.

Especially with regard to the medley relay where backstroke can become her lot if Sarah Sjöström gets the butterfly.

Backstroke is getting more and more fun and I want to swim in the team, says Hansson.

The semifinal will be decided tonight, Monday.
