Joy or Disappointment – the Decision Arrives Today

Hundreds of thousands of Swedes are now receiving the long-awaited admission notice to universities and colleges. For those who receive a positive response, it is important to quickly accept.

One has until July 19 to do so. But don't rest on your laurels, respond as soon as possible, says Robin Johansson at the Swedish Council for Higher Education.

The admission notices are announced on Thursday morning. The notices are published on the website Antagning.se and the applicants also receive notification by email. By Friday, July 19, at the latest, one must have submitted one's response.

It is also extremely important to keep an eye on one's email after the second admission notice on July 25 to avoid missing instructions from the university or college one has been admitted to. They inform, among other things, about when and how to register, which is just as important as accepting one's place.

More applicants

The number of applicants is higher this year than before, with around 405,000 applicants, which is eight percent more than in the autumn of 2023.

The uncertain labor market is one of the explanations, says Robin Johansson, who is the acting head of the admissions department at the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).

In uncertain times, more people tend to further educate themselves to strengthen their position in the labor market.

Vocational training

When it comes to education and institutions, the situation looks the same as before: law, economics, and medical programs are still popular, and it is the large universities that top the list. The universities in Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg, Lund, Umeå, and Linnaeus University account for 43 percent of the number of applicants, according to Robin Johansson.

What stands out, however, is that more people are applying for higher education with vocational training. This may also be due to the labor market situation, as this type of education provides a clearer path into working life.

Occupational therapist, higher education engineer, and physiotherapist are some of the programs that have increased in popularity.

Second chance

Worth considering after the admission notice is that even those who have not applied for a place have the opportunity to do so.

It can serve as a wake-up call, if one has not applied but comes to think differently, it's not too late. There may be programs and courses open for late application where the places have not yet been filled.

Thursday, July 11: Admission notice with response requirement. If one has been admitted to an education or received a reserve place, one must accept to keep one's place. This is done on My Pages on Antagning.se, where one also declines the education or reserve places one is not interested in.

Friday, July 19: Last response day.

Thursday, July 25: Second admission notice. In the second selection, one is assessed based on the responses submitted earlier. If one has been admitted and wants to keep one's place or wants to remain as a reserve, one does not need to respond to the second admission notice. The only thing one needs to do is wait for instructions about registration or possible reserve admission.
