Leaves Olympic Dream for Family and Crane Operation

It became no Olympic Games medal for judoka Marcus Nyman in Paris. And there will be no more attempts for the 33-year-old crane operator, who has made his last major championship. Now it's enough for me. I'll go home and focus on the family, he says after the missed quarterfinal.

Nyman started by defeating the reigning Olympic silver medalist Eduard Trippel from Germany, but then it ended in the 90-kilo class of judo.

The 33-year-old Swede, who was competing in his fourth Olympic Games, lost in the second round to Aram Grigorian, a 26-year-old Russian who has been representing the United Arab Emirates for two years. Grigorian decided the match with just eleven seconds left.

A very tough loss. The German is actually tougher on paper, but I got into a bad situation against Grigorian and he managed to throw me, says Nyman.

He has double World Championship bronze, the latest he took last year, but has dreamed of an Olympic medal. Nyman came closest in Rio 2016, when he finished fifth.

This was my last chance. After European Championship and World Championship medals, it would have been nice to finish with something at the Olympic Games too. But now it turned out like this, I'm very pleased with my career, says Nyman, who works as a crane operator in his daily life.

He at least got to experience a Swedish Olympic medal in the end. On the first day of the Olympic Games, 18-year-old Tara Babulfath took Sweden's first Olympic judo medal ever, in the 48-kilo class.

Yes, wow, what a performance, she's completely incredible. It's very big for Swedish judo, I hope it brings more successes. I don't know if people in Sweden understand how big it is.

Born: August 14, 1990 (33 years old), in Botkyrka municipality.

Sport: Judo.

Club: Stockholmspolisen.

Main merits: European Championship gold 2010, World Championship bronze 2021 and 2023, European Championship bronze 2011 and 2016, five Grand Slam wins.
