Melting glaciers redraw national borders

Italy and Switzerland are adjusting the border between the countries since climate change in the Alps is melting the glaciers that have formed a natural border.

The changes affect the ski resort Zermatt where the countries have agreed to adjust the border at Testa Grigia, Plateau Rosa, Rifugio Carrel, and Gobba di Rollin, reports Bloomberg.

Europe is the continent that is warming up the fastest and it is most clearly noticeable in areas like the Alps where the glaciers have lost ten percent of their volume over the past two years, according to the EU's climate service Copernicus.

The melting glaciers have already cost several people their lives. In 2022, eleven people died in a glacier collapse when ice, snow, and stone broke loose from the glacier Punta Rocca on the mountain top Marmolada in the Italian Dolomites.

In Switzerland, the government signed the border change on Friday and stated in a statement that large parts of the border are defined by the glaciers' outlines and eternal snow. "But due to glacier melting, these formations are changing, which leads to a change in the dynamically defined national border."
