The Democrats' presidential candidate and US Vice President Kamala Harris is leading in three crucial so-called swing states. This is shown by a new opinion poll from New York Times and Siena College.
In Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, Harris is leading by four percentage points. Her main opponent, the Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump, has the support of 46 percent of voters against Harris' 50.
The swing states play an important role since they usually tip the balance between a Republican and Democratic majority, and thus can decide the election.
The new poll is one of the first comprehensive ones conducted since President Joe Biden announced that he would drop out of his re-election campaign earlier this summer.
Previously, the situation between Trump and Biden was fairly even in nationwide opinion polls, with a small lead for Trump in several of the states that may decide the election.
