The Democrats' presumed presidential candidate Kamala Harris is approaching the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to an opinion poll by The New York Times and Siena College.

According to the survey, there is only a one-percentage-point difference between Harris and Trump when it comes to likely voters. Among registered voters, Harris receives 46 percent and Trump 48 percent, according to the opinion poll.

The differences are within the margin of error for both voter groups.

US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not run in the autumn presidential election. The withdrawal came after criticism from his own camp in the wake of Biden's disastrous performance in a debate against Trump at the end of June. Biden gave a confused and weak impression during the debate, which prompted heavyweights within the Democratic Party to urge him to step down.

When NYT and Siena College conducted an opinion poll early in July, Biden was six percentage points behind Trump among likely voters.

Among registered voters, Biden was nine percentage points behind Trump in the survey conducted after the debate.

The survey was conducted between July 22-24 and 1,142 people participated.
