Algeria's incumbent president Abdelmadjid Tebboune has emerged victorious in the country's presidential election, receiving nearly 95 percent of the votes.

The chairman of the electoral commission, Mohamed Charfi, says that "the election was characterized by extensive openness" and "reflected the people's attitude towards the election".

Of the 5,630,000 votes cast, 5,320,000 votes went to the independent candidate Tebboune, Charfi announced in a statement that was delayed by three hours for unknown reasons.

Exact figures on voter turnout were lacking when the electoral commission announced the result. Earlier, the opposition had boycotted the election.

The main opponents were the moderate Islamist Abdelaali Hassani and the socialist candidate Youcef Aouchiche.

In the 2019 election, only 40 percent of those eligible to vote in Algeria cast their ballots.
