The radioactive substance Cesium-137 has been measured over Sweden.

At all the measurement stations, very low levels have been measured, no risk whatsoever for humans or the environment, says Simon Karlsson, investigator at the Implementation Preparedness Unit at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority to TT.

The substance has been measured at all six measurement stations in Sweden, in Visby, Ljungbyhed, Kiruna, Gävle, Stockholm, and Umeå.

It is with quite high probability a fallout from the Chernobyl accident. You see this type of increases quite regularly, several times a year, often due to forest fires or soil cultivation, says Simon Karlsson.

In early September, a forest fire raged near Chernobyl in Ukraine, a likely cause behind the increase, writes Ritzau.

The substance has also been measured in Denmark and Finland.

In September, "very low values" of the radioactive substance cesium-137 were measured over Denmark, writes the Danish authority Nukleart Beredskab on X.
