Rissveds without World Championship medal on Olympic Games distance

The Swedish mountain bike star Jenny Rissveds took Olympic bronze in Paris and cycled home a World Championship bronze in the cross-country short track in Pal Arinsal, Andorra, on Friday. On the Olympic distance (XCO), success eluded her – the Swede was far from the medals.

When the Dutchwoman Puck Pieterse crossed the finish line, Rissveds had several minutes of cycling left out on the track. In the end, the 30-year-old cycled in to a 19th place – over four minutes after Pieterse, who led from start to finish.

Silver was taken by Anne Terpstra, the Netherlands, and bronze went to Martina Berta, Italy. The race's second Swedish participant, Linn Gustafzzon, finished in 50th place.

Rissveds was not the only pre-race favorite who had a tough day in Andorra. The French star Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, who won the Olympic Games event in Paris and has taken five World Championship gold medals on the distance, finished in 14th place.

Ferrand-Prevot is now quitting mountain biking to instead focus on road cycling. There, the Frenchwoman took World Championship gold in 2014.
