Russian authorities label The Times as an "undesirable organization".
This means that the news site is banned from operating in Russia – and that anyone who can be considered to have ties to it risks being punished.
The decision is motivated by the fact that The Moscow Times "discredits the Russian leadership's decisions in both foreign and domestic affairs".
The Kremlin has accelerated the process of suppressing independent media in the country since the full-scale military offensive against Ukraine began in 2022.
The Moscow Times, which publishes in both English and Russian, has operated from Amsterdam since the outbreak of the war. The label as an "undesirable organization" in Russia complicates any form of cooperation with people in Russia.
"Of course, we will continue our work as usual: with independent journalism. It is a crime in Putin's Russia", writes The Moscow Times founder Derk Sauer on X.
