Casper Ruud was knocked out already in his first singles match in Båstad's ATP tennis tournament.

The world number one lost to 85th-ranked Thiago Monteiro in straight sets in the second round.

In the afternoon, Ruud could redeem the fiasco with the help of Rafael Nadal.

The 25-year-old Ruud, seeded second in the singles tournament, had a bye in Tuesday's first round and was directly qualified for the second.

There, the Norwegian was knocked out directly by unseeded and 85th-ranked Thiago Monteiro from Brazil with set scores 3–6, 3–6.

Ruud instead focused on playing in the doubles tournament together with Spanish legend Rafael Nadal.

On Monday, the Norwegian-Spanish pair, who received a wildcard in the doubles, defeated Guido Andreozzi, Argentina, and Miguel Reyes-Varela, Mexico, in straight sets with scores 6–1, 6–4.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ruud and Nadal faced Théo Arribagé and Roman Safiullin in the doubles tournament's second round.

Even then, the first-named duo emerged victorious, after the score 6–4, 3–6, 12–10.

When you can't win singles, you have to try to win doubles. It wasn't the best way to start the day, but a nice way to end the day for me. It's special to win with "Rafa", we had a bit of luck but we're looking forward to the next match, says Ruud in the post-match interview.

Ruud and Nadal are thus clear for the semifinal in the doubles tournament in Båstad.

It's not easy to come here after losing in singles, but Casper played so well this afternoon. It was a good level of tennis against good players, we enjoyed the match, says Nadal and adds:

The audience was fantastic, full stands for a doubles match, it's fantastic. I enjoy every match here.
