"Sagström: We fought all the way to the goal"

The uphill battle ahead of Sunday was too steep, but Europe managed to create drama when the Solheim Cup was decided on American soil. I'm proud that we fought all the way to the finish, says Madelene Sagström, one of four Swedes on the European team.

The USA led with 10–6 ahead of Sunday's decisive 12 singles matches in the Solheim Cup team competition at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia.

We didn't have the best starting position, says Madelene Sagström to Viaplay.

Even though the USA relatively early reached 13 points and were only 1.5 points from securing the final victory, it took a while before the Americans reached it. The longer the day went on, the more even it became in several matches.

It was pretty quiet for a while on the last nine. I thought that was positive, because quiet is good for us, says Sagström.

The Swede was on hole 17 when she finally heard a victory cry. Then, Lilia Vu had secured the half point needed for the USA to win the team competition for the first time since 2017.

It's of course disappointing, but it's always tough to win away. They really had great crowd support with them this week, says Sagström.

Sagström won her singles match against Sarah Schmelzel with 1/0, but the point only meant that Europe improved their loss score. After Europe had taken home the trophy three editions in a row, the USA could win with 15.5–12.5.

The next Solheim Cup will be decided in two years at Bernardus Golf outside 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.
