Sjöström's highs under 16 years

March 22, 2008: The sensational breakthrough comes out of nowhere. The 14-year-old super talent surprises and takes the European Championship gold on 100 meters butterfly in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in her championship debut.

August 9, 2008: Makes her Olympic Games debut in the water cube in Beijing and finishes 27th on 100 meters butterfly.

July 27, 2009: Sarah Sjöström takes her first World Championship gold when she wins 100 meters butterfly in Rome and sets double world records.

August 8, 2015: Super-Sarah wins World Championship gold on 50 meters butterfly in Kazan, Russia. It's her first World Championship gold on a distance besides 100 meters butterfly.

August 8, 2016: Takes her first Olympic Games gold when she wins 100 meters butterfly on world record time in Rio de Janeiro.

July 30, 2017: Wins her first World Championship gold in freestyle when she strikes on 50 meters freestyle in Budapest. She also sets a world record in the semifinal.

July 28, 2019: Becomes historic as the first woman in history to take five individual medals in one and the same World Championship in Gwangju, South Korea.

August 1, 2021: Takes Olympic Games silver on 50 meters freestyle just half a year after she broke her arm when she slipped on an ice patch at home in Stockholm.

July 30, 2023: Passes Olympic Games king Michael Phelps and becomes the all-time most decorated World Championship medalist individually. The gold on 50 meters freestyle in Fukuoka, Japan, is her 21st individual World Championship medal (12 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze). In February this year, she took two more World Championship golds.

July 31, 2024: Upsets and wins Olympic Games gold on 100 meters freestyle after coach Antonio Lutula convinced her to swim the distance a few days earlier.
