The leading indexes on the New York Stock Exchange rose as the trading week began.

The S&P 500 index rose 0.8 percent, the Dow Jones industrial index increased 0.5 percent, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index went up 0.9 percent.

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing, which is struggling with an ongoing strike, fell 1.3 percent. The company announced on Friday evening that it will lay off 10 percent of its workforce.

Semiconductor manufacturer Nvidia rose 2.4 percent.

Biotech company Longboard Pharmaceuticals soared 51.7 percent after the Danish pharmaceutical company H Lundbeck said it would buy the company for $2.6 billion.

Investors are now waiting for a number of heavy quarterly reports later in the week. On Tuesday, for example, major bank Bank of America and pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson will release their figures.
