The division within the Democrats remains deep.

More and more party colleagues are said to want to see Biden step aside for a more energetic presidential candidate ahead of the autumn election.

Leading Democrats in the House of Representatives met digitally on Sunday to discuss the situation that arose after Joe Biden's criticized debate performance against Donald Trump last week.

Several Democratic committee leaders – including Jerry Nadler from New York, Jim Himes from Connecticut, and Mark Takano from California – are said to have stated during the meeting that Biden should step down, according to two sources for AP.

Other top Democrats are said to have expressed their support for the president.

Biden personally called around to party colleagues over the weekend ahead of the resumption of work in Congress, following a break due to national day celebrations.

I absolutely believe we can turn it around, says Senator Alex Padilla, California, one of those who received a call from the president.

Five Democratic members of the House of Representatives have previously publicly demanded that the president step down. They have expressed concerns that Biden may not have the strength required to defeat rival Donald Trump in November.

But Biden remains determined that he is the most qualified candidate to take on the fight.

To be honest, I've never been more optimistic about the future of the USA if we stick together, said Biden during a visit to a church service in Philadelphia on Sunday.
