The humanitarian crisis in war-torn Sudan appears to be worsening further due to a major cholera outbreak in the wake of flooding.

We classify the cholera outbreak as an epidemic. This is due to weather conditions and because the drinking water has become contaminated, says Health Minister Haitham Ibrahim in a video statement.

He adds that the decision was made in consultation with authorities in the state of Kassala in eastern Sudan, which has been severely affected by several weeks of heavy rainfall. Thousands of people have been displaced by the floods.

Sudan has been ravaged by a civil war between government forces and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. The conflict has triggered the world's currently worst humanitarian crisis, where over ten million people have been displaced from their homes and at least 25 million people are threatened by famine.
