The rescue service is struggling on Friday to try to limit a fuel leak since a ship sank off the coast of Greenland, according to the police.

The ship, which sailed under the Greenlandic flag, ran aground on Thursday night.

The concern is that the spill could harm the fragile Arctic environment, as hydrocarbons have been detected on the water surface in a fjord that flows into the town of Nanortalik in southern Greenland.

Up to 20,000 liters of fuel are feared to have leaked from the 30-meter-long ship and reached the fjord, despite pumps and barriers being placed.

Wind, tides, and ocean currents have, according to the police, complicated the rescue service's work.
