The national bomb squad has secured a suspected hand grenade found on a balcony in central Borås on Thursday morning.

According to the police, there was a risk to the public and therefore a larger area was cordoned off.

It was at 11 am on Thursday when the apartment owner opened the balcony door and saw the object, which prompted the police to be alerted. However, the suspected grenade may have been thrown up already during the night or morning, according to the police.

We suspect that someone may have stood in the courtyard and thrown it up, and it landed on the balcony, says police spokesperson Thomas Fuxborg.

Cordoned off

The police cordoned off a larger area and residents were advised to close windows and doors and stay in their apartments.

At 1 pm, the police announced that the suspected grenade had been secured.

It has been secured by the national bomb squad and will be taken to a safe location for a technical examination, says Fuxborg.

Door-to-door inquiry

Later in the afternoon, the police lifted the cordons. By then, they had ensured that there were no more suspicious objects on the premises.

The investigation is ongoing. We have, among other things, conducted a "digital door-to-door inquiry" with the help of the police contact center, which has phoned around to residents, says Fredrik Svedemyr, police spokesperson.

The person living in the apartment where the grenade was found is not known to the police previously, and there is no threat against the person. The same applies to other residents in the building.

We are investigating broadly and are not ruling anything out. However, at present, there are no known connections to a specific threat or to any network conflict, says Svedemyr.

The police are investigating the incident as a serious crime involving explosives and preparation for general destruction. No one has been arrested.
