Enzo Fernández went live when the Argentine players sang a racist chant about French players.
Something that was not well received by his French teammates at Chelsea – who unfollowed him on Instagram.
Fifa has now launched an investigation into the incident.
It was after Argentina's win against Colombia in the final of Copa América that the live broadcast started. Among other things, the Argentine players sang that the French players are actually from Angola.
Enzo Fernández was the one who went live, and who has borne a large part of the blame for the incident. Now, several of his French teammates in the club team Chelsea – Benoît Badiashile, Malo Gusto, Axel Disasi, and Wesley Fofana – have all unfollowed Fernández on Instagram.
In addition, Fofana has spoken out on X and condemned the chant.
"Football under 2024: Shameless racism", he writes.
Apologetic
During the night to Wednesday, Fernández apologized for the incident and wrote that the chant in the clip does not reflect his values.
"The chant is extremely offensive and there is clearly no excuse for using that kind of language. I am against all types of discrimination and want to apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of the moment during our Copa América celebration", the Argentine writes on Instagram.
Fifa launches investigation
Fifa is now announcing that the incident is being investigated.
"Fifa is aware of the video circulating on social media and the incident is under investigation. Fifa condemns all types of discrimination against all people, including players, fans, or referees", the federation writes in a statement.
Chelsea also condemns the whole thing on its website.
