Denmark's national football team captain, Kasper Hjulmand, is leaving. This is announced by the Danish Football Association on its website.

"It's about what's best for the team," he says.

Kasper Hjulmand took over as national team captain for Denmark's men's national team four years ago. Now the mission has reached its end.

After an evaluation made by Hjulmand himself and football manager Peter Møller at the Danish Football Association, it has been decided that the Danish national team needs "new energy".

"When I look two years ahead to the World Championship, I can feel that it will be best for the team to get a new face and new ideas, which can write a new great chapter with this fantastic team," says Hjulmand on the association's website.

He has led Denmark in three championships, including this year's European Championship in Germany, where they were eliminated in the round of 16.

In the 2021 European Championship, they made it all the way to the semifinals – where they lost to England in extra time. The World Championship adventure in Qatar 2022 ended already in the group stage.

"It has been an incredible honor and privilege to get to coach our national team for four years. I have given everything I have to achieve success and for the people to gather around the team," says Hjulmand.

He is handing over to Morten Wieghorst, who will be the temporary national team captain until the end of the year.

"It is, of course, a great honor to be chosen in this situation. We have a fantastic talent pool in Danish football and I look forward to taking on the task that awaits in the autumn," says Wieghorst.
