The Left Alliance is making a significant advance in Finland's EU election, and is likely to end up with around 17 per cent of the votes. This represents an increase of almost 10 percentage points, and the party is set to become the second largest, according to Yle.

The political winds appear to be blowing in a different direction in Finland compared to several other EU countries, where far-right parties are making gains. The nationalist Finns Party appears to be backing off in the election, and is currently on 7.6 per cent with over 91 per cent of the votes counted. If the result holds, the party will have lost almost 6 percentage points.

However, the expected winner is the Coalition Party, which is likely to receive around 24 per cent.
