The players' union Fifpro, and European top leagues, have jointly submitted a complaint to the EU Commission against Fifa.

They believe that the national team schedule is far too hectic.

"It's a risk to the players' health", they write in a statement.

For several years, the players' union, together with the players themselves, has been calling for fewer matches and a more relaxed game schedule. Despite this, no significant change has occurred, and now the players' union, together with European top leagues, has reported the international football association Fifa to the EU.

They believe that Fifa is violating EU competition rules.

"For several years, the leagues and the players' association have repeatedly urged Fifa to develop a clear, transparent, and fair process regarding the national team calendar", they write in a joint statement, and continue:

"The national team calendar is now beyond overloaded, has become unsustainable for the leagues, and is a risk to the players' health."

Taking legal action

Furthermore, the players' union and the European leagues "European Leagues" write that they will proceed with a legal process regarding the matter.

"Taking legal action is now the only responsible step to take to protect football, its ecosystem, and its workforce."

Responded to the complaint

Later on Tuesday, Fifa responded to the statement, and wrote that the game schedule is essential for the survival of international football.

"The current game schedule was unanimously approved by the Fifa Council, which consists of representatives from all continents, after an extensive consultation with both the players' union and the league organization."

"Fifa's calendar is the only tool that ensures that national team football can continue to survive, coexist, and thrive together with domestic and continental club football", writes Fifa.
