Tough for Lindgren – Zmarzlik secured the World Championship title

The Swedish speedway star Fredrik Lindgren can continue to dream of a World Championship gold. The Swede finished in 14th place in the second-to-last GP event in Danish Vojens. Instead, he had to watch the Pole Bartosz Zmarzlik win his third consecutive World Championship title.

It is the fifth time in his career that Zmarzlik wins the World Championship series. The 29-year-old Pole had to settle for a second place in Vojens, but the placement was enough to secure the total victory with one GP competition left to run. Briton Robert Lambert won the event.

It feels unreal, says Zmarzlik in Eurosport's broadcast.

Before the stop in Denmark, Lindgren – World Championship runner-up last year – had been on the podium in four consecutive events, but he had a tough evening. Lindgren finished in 14th place and already before his last heat, the chance to reach the semi-final was gone.

Despite the disappointment, the Swede still has a chance to take a new World Championship medal. Ahead of the last GP competition in Polish Torun on September 28, Lindgren lies third on a total of 127 points. Second-placed Lambert has 137 points and fourth-placed Martin Vaculík, Slovakia, stands on 114 points. Clear World Championship winner Zmarzlik has 159 points.

The second Swedish rider in the GP competition, Kim Nilsson, finished eleventh in Denmark.
